Travel Insurance is vital. It will cover you for anything that may happen while you are on holiday. It will also cover you for cancellation as long as you have a valid reason. Even though you make a private booking for accommodation and arrange your own travel arrangements you will still be covered by most insurance policies. It is important that you check with the insurance company that the policy will provide cover for private bookings. You will probably be very surprised at how reasonable the rates are when you book travel insurance directly. I have given some links below to some companies that provide travel insurance. Make sure you apply for your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in plenty of time before you travel. The EHIC replaced the E111 which ceased to be valid on the 31st December 2005. You can apply for the EHIC online, by post or by phone. You can get an application form at the Post Office which you then fill in and post.
