On this page I have put several links to books and maps about Corfu and other Greek places which you may find useful. All the links go to Amazon.co.uk which is an on-line bookshop which I use frequently. The books and maps will be available from many other sources which you may prefer to use. However, if you order any books using the links below then I will receive a small commission which will be donated to the "Friends of the Ionian". This organisation was set up as part of the European Year of Tourism in 1990 with the aim of redirecting tourism development in Greece's Ionian Islands along less destructive lines. Please consider becoming a member. I have also listed a few of my personal favourites as well. If anyone has any suggestions to be added then please contact me, I'd love to hear from you. If you regularly order items from Amazon then please consider ordering them through the link at the bottom of this page so that the Friends of the Ionian can benefit, thank you.

A FEW OF MY PERSONAL FAVOURITES

Greek Style (Style Book Series)

A beautiful book full of inspirational photographs. A must if you are looking for some insight on traditional Greek styles. This would make an ideal present for anyone who just loves Greek colours and styles.

The Taste of a Place: Corfu

Corfu is rich in history-and also rich in culinary traditions. From fish stews to scented yoghurt cake, baklava to octopus salad, there is more to eating on the island than just Taramasalata and souvlakia. This book if for food-lovers who want to get the most from a stay on Corfu. It will help them track down the best tavernas, tell them where to shop for the finest ingredients, guide them through the complexities of Greek wine, and even show them how to cook authentic local recipes for themselves.

Greece on My Wheels

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Edward Enfield explores the beauty and history of the Peloponnese in a travelogue that combines wit, charm and scholarship. Returning to Greece to follow in the footsteps of the Romantic poet Lord Byron, the author's second trip sees him cycling around historic sites. The author's son Harry may be the most famous member of the Enfield family but if the author continues to write such excellent travelogues I think that may not be the case for long!

cover It's All Greek to Me!

This is, quite simply, the funniest and most realistic book about an 'in-comer' living in a Greek community. This is how it really is! The struggles, the humour, the peculiarities and friendships. It is a 'warts and all' book. It captures the very essence of what living in Greece is all about. If you have read other peoples accounts of living in a foreign country and felt let down by the stories then BUY THIS BOOK! It will make you laugh out loud.

Landscapes of Corfu

This book turns the island inside-out and helps you find a Corfu unknown to most tourists. The book focuses on walking, but it is not intended only for walkers. The car touring section will show you the best of the island, and the picnic suggestions make an excellent introduction to the countryside. There are walks for all ages and abilities on this island, from strolls to beaches to challenging day-long hikes in the mountains or criss-crossing the plains. A very useful book for people intending to drive a 4x4 off-road.

cover Collins Gem Greek Phrase Finder

This phrase book may not be the most comprehensive but it has all the basics and has the added advantage that it fits in a bum bag! My copy is well used and I will soon have to get a new one.

cover The Greek Cook

When you return from your holiday full of the memories of traditional Greek food lovingly prepared in the small family tavernas, this is the book to have. The recipes reproduce authentic Greek meals that will have all your friends begging for the details. Easy to prepare with ingredients available in the UK.

cover Kerkyra (Corfu)

This is the most accurate map of Corfu that I have found so far. Anyone who has seen a Greek map will know that they seem to be more luck than judgement. This one is very clear, the place names are in Greek and English and tracks are clearly marked.

Making a Garden on a Greek Hillside Hardback  Making a Garden on a Greek Hillside Paperback

"I like this book as it is not a garden instruction book but more like a diary of how the garden developed from a dry hillside into a magnificent garden now belonging to the Greek Horticultural Society. Very interesting, she was trying to use indigenous plants not imported ones". [Sue, Castaway Travel,  www.corfucastaway.com ].
